Misgana is an Ethiopian-American, 16 year-old girl who attends high school in the suburbs of Washington DC. She is generally mild-mannered, responsible and loyal to her family. She is especially close to her mother. She struggles to meet her parents’ cultural expectations while juggling a social life with her best friend, Sophi, and her love interest, Eric. Her attempts to balance her Ethiopian and American cultures lead her into compromising and comedic situations where she acts out of character.

Ethiopian, 35-40 year-old female, nurse, wife and loving mother of Misgana, Mitu and their older sister who is away at college. She has quiet strength, remains calm under pressure and is a diplomat at heart. Her ability to empathize, listen and set boundaries with her husband and children make her the true head of the household. She is also a leader in the community and is actively involved in church, women’s groups or mahber and the hospital where she works.

Eritrean, 16-year old girl who attends high school with Misgana in the Washington DC metropolitan area. She is an only child with countless cousins. She is a realist, daring and fiercely loyal to her family and her best friend, Misgana. She can easily transition between her Eritrean and American cultures and is considered cool in both. She is a good judge of character and can quickly read social cues to figure out the best way to respond. She has a great sense of humor and lots of casual friends, although she is very private and only shares her secrets with Misgana.

Caucasian, 16 year old boy who attends high school with Misgana in the Washington DC metropolitan area and is Eric’s best friend or sidekick. He is also casual friends with Sophi. Steve has a literal and direct communication style which can make him somewhat socially awkward at times. He is athletic, smart and popular (by association with Eric) and boisterous. He lives for each day and has an endearing qualify of being fully present in each moment.

Caucasian, 16 year old girl who attends high school with Misgana and is Sarina’s best friend or sidekick. She has a pleasant and accommodating personality. In contrast to Sarina, Maesie generally gets along with everyone and is a natural peacemaker. She is loyal to Sarina because of their long history as friends, although her peers cannot understand how the two are so close.

Ethiopian, 40-45 year-old male, engineer, husband and loving father to Misgana, Mitu and their older sister who is away at college. He views himself as the head of the household and modern or hip father, though his children disagree. He is proud of his Ethiopian culture and is committed to teaching his children its history, language, values and traditions. He is quick-witted, boisterous and somewhat dramatic. He is the main source of comedic relief in the show.

Ethiopian, 14 year-old girl who attends high school with Misgana in the Washington DC metropolitan area. She is the youngest daughter of Tesfaye and Tigest, and Misgana’s little sister. She is especially close to her father and sassy like him. She is book smart and street smart, a real asset or detriment to Misgana depending on the inducements her sister offers her. Mitu is an observer and truth-teller at heart. She can become overly focused on her family life and miss out on developing her own social outlets.

African-American, 16 year old boy who attends high school with Misgana in the Washington DC metropolitan area and is her primary love interest. He is an Afrocentric intellectual who comes from a family that was prominent in the American Civil Rights movement. He is artistic, athletic, smart and popular, yet mild-mannered. He is committed to social justice and plans to contribute to society as a businessman and philanthropist, an elected official, or other community leader.

Latina, 16 year old girl who attends high school with Misgana and considers Misgana her nemesis because they share the same love interest. Sarina is attractive, popular, well-connected and outspoken. She is the first to hear the latest rumor and is known for starting rumors for her personal entertainment. She likes to be in control, appears confident and has a hard time trusting others.
